Since it opened in 1997, the L.I.F.E. Center for Independent Living has been dedicated to helping people with disabilities live lives with confidence, independence, and dignity. The Center serves as a resource for people of all ages with all types of disabilities in St. Francois, Madison, and Ste. Genevieve counties, Missouri. We provide advocacy, support, and services to help individuals make their own life choices, and we also work to educate our community on disability issues and to increase accessibility for everyone.
Many of the staff members at L.I.F.E. experience a disability, and all of us understand that most people can expect to be challenged by some sort of disability in their lifetimes, if only due to the normal aging process. We therefore take our work seriously, because we care about our community, and we care about you.
Our Four Core Services
- ADVOCACY: We advocate for accessibility and disability rights on the state and national levels and train individuals to advocate for themselves.
- PEER SUPPORT: Staff and volunteers who have successfully dealt with their own disabilities draw on their experiences to help others explore options, solve provlems, and develop new skills.
- INFORMATION AND REFERRAL: Upon request, we will research a topic in the Center’s library of resources relating to disability. We also provide referrals to other agencies, as appropriate.
- INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING: Our staff instructs individuals in attendant management, pre-employment, money management, daily living, and other skills critical to independent living.
